Tips For Quick Healing After Any Type Of Surgery

When surgery has been recommended by a doctor, there is usually no other way to treat the condition in question. For many people, the healing of the scar is a painful and long process depending on the size of the incision. Delayed healing in most cases is caused by re-infection of the wound multiple times causing the healing processes to be on a downward gradient. However, there are things that can be done to aid in faster healing of the surgical site by avoiding site contamination:

  1. The practice of hand washing cannot be overemphasized enough in such a situation. Proper washing of hands involves the use of soap, lukewarm water and a 30 second period massaging in the lather. The hands are the front line agents for transferring germs and by keeping them clean, you by extension keep the wound clean.
  2. After surgery, doctors will give antibiotics as a preventive measure against bacteria attacking the wound. It can therefore be very tempting to skip the dose but this just works to expose one to the possibility of getting an inflamed wound. Once the dose of antibiotics is started, it has to be completed to avoid developing resistance to these types of medicines. Some doctors will also give topical ointments for sealing the wound area from germs. Be sure to use these as per the prescription.
  3. Many smokers have heard the anti smoking campaign preached to them over and over again and with an open wound, the risk is not in the cancer but prolonged healing periods. There are higher chances for smokers getting re-infected during wound recovery than there are for people who do not smoke. In addition to this, the risk of scarring is also higher and this translates into additional scar removal expenses if the wound was on a visible part of the body.
  4. As the healing process progresses, a patient may feel the urge to step out of the house for some fresh air. The public is not as diligent in hygiene as you might be and this means that everything you touch when out in public has the potential to cause an infection. Water may not be easy to come by in all instances but a hand sanitizer carried in the pocket will work just as well. It is safer to assume that everyone else apart from yourself are not clean and you are protecting yourself from them.
